What is Obesity?

What is obesity, which is specified as one of the biggest health problems of the 21st century?

Obesity is a condition in which too much body fat accumulates and may have a negative impact on a person’s health.   • Lack of physical activity

On the other hand, domestic situations, the influence of peers, the social factors that the individual is exposed to, the social insufficiency, the lack of information about the nutrition of the families, the low socio-economic level and the resulting lifestyle are the other important factors.

One of the factors that should be considered in the development of obesity is nutrition in the first years of life. It has been reported that the incidence of obesity is lower in breast-fed baby than in non-breastfed baby.

Obesity Treatments

Obesity, which seriously reduces the quality of life, is a treatable chronic disease. In the treatment of obesity; medical nutrition (diet) therapy, exercise therapy, behavior change therapy, drug therapy, surgical treatment methods are applied. Diet treatments should be specific to the individual.

Losing Weight with Diet

The first and most common method for obesity treatment is to lose weight with healthy obesity diet programs. Slimming with the right diet program is the most preferred and healthy method in weight loss.

Enough amount of protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins and minerals in diet meal plans is important both for the body’s health and for the burning of excess fats in the body. Consumption of adequate nutrients is an important element for permanent weight loss.

In addition to diet and exercise, behavioral change treatment can provide 0.5-1 kg weight loss per week and maintain this weight loss for approximately 1 year. Approximately 25% of individuals continue to lose weight after treatment. In addition, it has been reported that behavioral treatment improves psychological functions and reduces the rate of attrition due to depression.

The frequency of examinations with the therapist is also important in the treatment of behavior change. Examinations should be held more frequently at the beginning of treatment, then less frequently, and later as needed.

Surgical Treatment

Gastric banding, bypass, gastric balloon, and stomach reduction are among the bariatric surgical methods and are applied to reduce the absorption of nutrients. It is a method that is mostly applied for aesthetic purposes for the removal of body fat. If the diet does not change after applying these methods, the lost weight is likely to be recovered in a short time.

Drug Treatment

Drug treatment is used in the long-term treatment of obesity not used for a short time. If patient does not lose weight within 4 weeks of treatment, the drug is discontinued. In the first 6 months of treatment, the weight gain becomes faster and then slows down. The drug is given in terms of the condition of the obese patient.

The patient who has a high appetite is given drugs that decrease the appetite and the patient who eats less, actives less and the drugs accelerating the metabolism are given. For those who have an active sports life, drugs that accelerate the burning of fats and convert them into energy are used.
